Stay Alert: Scams Impersonating Government Agencies

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – April 15, 2026 – Scammers often pose as trusted government agencies to gain your confidence and request personal information or payment. Recently, agencies in Wyoming—including the Wyoming State Archives—have reported an increase in such recent fraudulent messages.

These messages may appear official and can be convincing, often referencing access to important records such as birth certificates, marriage records, or other legal documents.

Here are a few things to watch for:

  • Unsolicited requests for personal records or information. If you did not initiate the request, approach it with caution.
  • Requests sent through unexpected channels. Official records requests are handled through established, secure processes, not unsolicited emails, texts, or phone calls.
  • Links or attachments from unknown sources claiming to provide access to records or require immediate action.
  • Requests for sensitive details such as birth dates, identification numbers, or certified record information outside of a verified process.

The Wyoming State Archives will not contact individuals unexpectedly to request personal documents or sensitive information.

If you receive a suspicious message, do not respond or click any links. Instead, contact the Wyoming State Archives directly using verified contact information from our official website.
